Design and Technology

At St Matthias we:

Aspire for our children to be inspired, and nurture a love for creativity, innovation, problem-solving and practical skills through Design and Technology. Developing an understanding and appreciation of the importance of Design and Technology in our ever changing world.

Believe through a broad and balanced curriculum, we equip our students with a solid foundation of technological knowledge and skills, enabling them to become confident and competent designers and makers. Creating an inclusive and stimulating learning environment where all children feel supported and encouraged to explore their creative potential.

Achieve this through a Design and Technology curriculum that builds on prior knowledge and skills, where our students will develop a passion for Design and Technology that will extend beyond the classroom. Fostering a lifelong curiosity, a deep understanding of the subject and a developed range of transferable skills.

At St Matthias we provide our students with a comprehensive Design and Technology curriculum that covers a range of skills and knowledge areas, enabling them to develop a deep understanding and passion for the subject. We strive to create an inclusive and stimulating learning environment where all children feel supported and encouraged to explore their creative potential in Design and Technology. We aim to foster a lifelong curiosity for Design and Technology, enabling our students to develop a deep understanding of the subject beyond their time at our school.

To achieve this, our curriculum is carefully designed to build on students' prior knowledge and skills, ensuring a progression of learning through each year group. We follow the National Curriculum for Design and Technology, incorporating strands such as materials and their properties, mechanisms, structures, and electronics. We ensure that our Design and Technology lessons are accessible to all students, regardless of their background, ability, or learning needs. Adaptation strategies are employed to meet the needs of our learners, including scaffolding and support materials for those who require extra guidance and stretch activities for those who are more able. To ensure a deep understanding, our Design and Technology curriculum incorporates opportunities for students to explore real-world contexts and examples. They are encouraged to think critically, analyse existing products and systems, and consider the impact of design choices on individuals, society, and the environment.

Through our intentional design and implementation, we aim to nurture a love for Design and Technology that extends beyond the classroom. Our students develop a passion for creativity, innovation, and problem-solving, and recognise the relevance and application of these skills in their daily lives.
