Art and Design

At St Matthias we:

Aspire for our children to cultivate a love for art and design, enabling them to develop confidence and autonomy in the creative process. We aim to foster an environment where every child feels inspired and motivated to explore their artistic talents.

Believe through a well-rounded art and design curriculum, we help our students appreciate the diversity between artists, their styles, and cultural backgrounds. By embedding these values, we seek to empower our students to create pieces of art that not only reflect their unique perspectives and experiences but also inspire others.

Achieve this through an art and design curriculum that provides a wide range of experiences, techniques, and mediums, building upon prior knowledge and skills. And exposing our students to diverse art forms, including painting, sculpture, printmaking, ceramics, textiles, and digital art.

At St Matthias Primary School we provide a supportive and nurturing environment for art and design. We also encourage collaboration and peer feedback, fostering a sense of community and a shared love for art and design. We have carefully designed our art and design curriculum to provide a wide range of experiences, techniques, and mediums. Our program builds upon prior knowledge and skills, ensuring progression and continuity in learning. We believe this approach will enable our students to develop a strong foundation in art and design.

Our curriculum exposes students to diverse art forms, including painting, sculpture, printmaking, ceramics, textiles, and digital art. We value the importance of hands-on experiences and practical learning opportunities. Therefore, our teaching methodology incorporates both teacher-led instruction and student-led exploration, allowing students to develop their creative thinking and problem-solving skills.

We ensure that our art and design curriculum is enriched with cultural references and examples from various artists, both historical and contemporary. Through studying different artists' works, our students gain a deeper understanding of artistic techniques, cultural influences, and diverse perspectives. This exposure enables them to analyse and critically engage with art, fostering their ability to appreciate and create works of art themselves.

Throughout the curriculum, we promote cross-curricular links, integrating art and design with other subjects such as history, geography, and literature. This interdisciplinary approach enhances our students' understanding of how art and design intersect with different aspects of life and society.

By maintaining a high-quality, inclusive, and inspiring art and design curriculum, we are confident that our students will develop into well-rounded individuals with a deep appreciation for art and design in all its diverse forms.
