World War I History Man

Year 5 have been fortunate enough to have an expert historian visit our class. He provided us with a fantastic opportunity to find out lots more about World War I. If you want to find out more, click on the link below. This will take you to our class blog.

Happy New Year!

Year 5 would like to wish everyone at St Matthias a very 'Happy New Year'. We are all looking forward to this term, especially our new topic 'Frozen Planet'. We will investigate and produce work on explorers, countries and continents, animals and lots more interesting, ice-related information.

Victorian School Day

We are approaching the end of the first term, which means the final two weeks of our current topic 'The Victorians'. All of year 5 and 6 took part in reenacting a school day that was typical of the Victorian period. Children were given the opportunity to dress up and work on their three R's.

We would like to say thank you to the parents who came in during the morning session and we hope that you all enjoyed yourselves.

Here are a couple of pictures from the day.

World War I and Remembrance Day

After the thoughtful and important assembly delivered by year two we decided to find more information out about the St Matthias pupils who lost their lives in World War I.
We started our research using the national medal archive website. Entering the names of the soldiers from the war memorial board we could access facts about their role in the army. Additionally, we were able to find some information regarding their regiment.
In further search of information we used the website Malvern Remembers. Malvern Remembers had biographies of each of the men listed on our memorial board. Reading about their lives made us further recognise the courage and bravery of these soldiers during World War I.
George Haughton was one of the names listed on the memorial board. It was interesting listening to Mrs Davies speak about the emotional reaction of the niece of George Haughton when information from a log book was found about him. It inspired us to use the log books to help us with our own research. We looked through the original logbooks and found his name and other soldiers listed.
We owe so much to these brave men and are proud that they were members of St Matthias School.
At the coming down of the sun and in the morning we will remember them.

Welcome to year 5's page

Year 5 have made a very positive start to the year. We have taken part in lots of exciting events already, including the harvest festival where we performed an Autumn poem, circus week, a local history trip and most recently some of the class took part in 'bikeability'. It doesn't stop there though, there's even more to come after half term! In November, year 5 will be going on a trip to 'The Black Country Museum'. Our topic for this term is 'The Victorians' and this trip will be a great opportunity for all of us to get a taste of Victorian life first-hand.
