Count Everyone In
Mathematics is a popular, interesting part of our daily life at St Matthias. Children are encouraged to develop and apply their mathematical skills over a range of subjects. They are taught to be persistent and resilient when faced with challenges. Our mathematics lessons are always just as much about the discoveries along the journey as the final destination.
We believe that all children need to be actively involved in learning key skills including: recognizing numbers and knowing place value; the quick recall of number bonds and knowing our tables. These are an essential part of a confident mathematician’s toolkit and enable pupils to be efficient and enthusiastic mathematicians.
We provide good quality teaching by employing teachers who have the necessary skills, supported by early, targeted interventions for those children who need more support. These interventions are based on a detailed assessment of the individual child’s needs. We provide a range of support packages such as:
We encourage parents to be actively involved and offer parent help sessions related to: mathematics games; visual support for formal calculation methods and homework support. We also ask that parents from Y2 to Y6 ensure that their children use their ixl account (https://uk.ixl.com/math/) at home on a regular basis. This programme teaches children how to solve problems with clear examples when they make a mistake.
Mathematics is a high priority for St Matthias and we know that a positive attitude alongside hard work will ensure that our children are well equipped for life.
