Class Visit to Malvern Fire Station
Monday 27th June 2016
This week we are learning all about the fire service and how fire fighters keep us safe. We have started the week off by walking up to Malvern Fire Station and meeting the fire fighters. We had a tour of the fire station and learnt all about the different vehicles, e.g. the main fire engine, the command support unit and the vehicles that are used to get up the Malvern Hills. We all then had a go using the hose and loved aiming at the cones. We had a great time and loved learning all about the fire service and how they help to keep us safe.
Thursday 23rd June 2016
This week we have been learning all about the police and how they help us. We have had lots of fun making our own police ID and creating 3D police cars in the creative area. Today, we had a special visitor who came in and spoke to Year R about his job and the different things that Police Officers do to help us. We learnt that they help to find lost children, talk to people if they are sad and make sure people aren't doing naughty things. We also learnt all about 'Stranger Danger' and how important it is not to talk to strangers.
It was really exciting to meet a real life hero and we were all thrilled when he drove onto the playground in his pick-up. We all got to sit in the car and pretend that we were driving it!!!
The lights all flashed and he even put his siren on. We had a lovey day, thank you to the police for helping us with this learning experience.
Rhyme Rocket Visit
Monday 23rd May
What an amazing morning we have had! Professor Poet and First Officer Ditty surprised the children with a special visit and performance. We loved creating rhymes with them to help fuel their space rocket as well as singing lots of funny rhyming songs as Professor Poet played his guitar.
The pictures give you a small glimpse into the fun that we had...ask your child what their favourite bit was and see whether they can remember any of the rhymes and songs that we learnt.

Tuesday 17th May
Beacon Dental Care Class Visit
This afternoon (Tuesday 3rd May) we had some very special visitors. They came from Beacon Dental Care and helped us to learn all about the importance of keeping our teeth clean and dental hygiene. They loved seeing our Dental Surgery role play area and were very impressed with what the children already knew. Remember to brush your teeth twice a day and stay away from those sugary drinks!

Easter Bonnet Stay and Play
What an amazing morning we have had making our Easter Bonnets ready for our parade tomorrow.
It was fantastic to see all of our families make such an effort to come and create a fantastic bonnet with their children.
A huge thank you must also go to Mrs. Taylor for getting all of the resources ready. We look forward to seeing you all tomorrow morning at 9am for our parade
Baggie Bird visits St. Matthias
We have had a very exciting day taking our penalties against Baggie Bird. Thank you very much to all of the children who have returned their sponsor forms. You have put in a great deal of effort fundraising and you should all be proud of each other. We have definitely got some future football stars in our class!
Reception Class also showed how reflective and caring we are when we talked about why we were raising money, well done.
Thursday 17th March
Active Creative Minibeast Dance Lesson
Today we were lucky enough to have one of our parents deliver a dance and PE lesson to Reception Class. We have been learning all about minibeasts this half-term and this amazing session was a great way to bring our learning to a fun and exciting end. The children loved being minibeasts and using the resources. Thank you very much Mrs Kent.
Wednesday 16th March
The Animal Man
Today we had a very exciting visitor at school. The Animal Man came in to visit us this afternoon and came with lots of exciting and exotic animals. We were all very brave and sensible when handling the animals and loved finding out all about the animals, where they live and what they like doing. The snakes were a particular hit with Reception Class. Which animal was your favourite?

Monday 14th - Friday 18th March
This week is Science Week at St. Matthias CE Primary School and we are very fortunate to have lots of lovely things to look forward to.
Today, Monday, we had a special delivery of chick eggs. It is our responsibility, with Nursery Class, to look after these eggs and make sure that they hatch into lovely chicks. If all goes to plan then we should have baby chicks hatching on Wednesday
We will be learning all about the life-cycle of a chicken and this first hand experience will be fantastic to support our learning.
Friday 18th March
On Friday 18th March we will be raising money for Sport Relief. It would be amazing if all the children could remember to come into school with something red on or wearing their favourite sporting outfit.
We have also had a visit from 'Baggie Bird', who is the West Bromwich Albion Football Club mascot. St Matthias have been given the challenge of raising as much sponsorship money as possible in order to take penalties against Baggie Bird on Sport Relief Day.
The more money your child raises the more prizes they will receive. Please check their sponsorship form for details.
KS1 Sports Roadshow
Thursday 10th March
Today we had some special visitors from Albion Foundation, who delivered a very exciting PE lesson to Reception Class. We all had 6 stations to visit in the sports hall and had to perform a task at each one.
We had to throw a ball against the wall and catch it, play a football passing game, jump as high as we could, do a sprinting race, hop through hoops and see how far we could stretch!
We were all very tired after this but thoroughly enjoyed testing ourselves.
World Book Day
Wow! We had an amazing day at school today and it was fantastic to see everyone dressed up as their favourite book characters. We had characters from lots of different stories, including Alice in Wonderland, The Enormous Crocodile and Little Red Riding Hood.

Our Favourite Story Book
We were lucky enough to be given some new story books to read in Reception Class and loved them all!!
We have been learning all about British Values and understand that we live in a democracy and that everyone's opinion matters. We decided that the best way to choose our favourite story book was to vote for it by putting a counter on our favourite. It was very exciting to find out what we thought as a class. Tuesday 1st March
St. David's Day
Today we celebrated the Welsh holiday of St. David's Day. We learnt all about how he became the Patron Saint of Wales and the importance of daffodils and leeks to this day.
We had lots of fun painting with smelly leeks and drew our own daffodils. We also made Welsh Cakes and they were lovely. Make sure that you ask us what the ingredients were!
Thursday 25th February
Today we had an exciting visitor who taught us all about being safe when we are walking on pavements. We learnt lots of useful information and all know to make sure that we walk on the 'safe side' of our adult.

This half term we are investigating minibeasts. We will enjoy learning all about the different creepy crawlies that we can find around Malvern and will be very busy with our activities over the next few weeks. Reception class will be creating observational drawings using chalks, writing their own information book, going on minibeast hunts and creating their own minibeast by combining the 'best' parts of different creepy crawlies!

Today we celebrated Shrove Tuesday. Reception Class loved making their own pancakes and then had great fun having races in the playground
On Wednesday we invited our family members in for a stay and play morning. We all had great fun making 'things that move' in the hall. I think that the 2 most popular activities were the balloon monsters and the vehicles
Thank you for making the morning one that your children loved and for your continued support.
On Tuesday we had a lovely trip to Pizza Express in Worcester. We had to get to school bright and early so that we were there in time and we all had a great time seeing the sights from the coach.
It was amazing to see how enthused everyone was and every child tasted lots of ingredients, with olives being very unpopular! We all then made our own margherita pizza to take home to eat with our family.

Monday 25th January
Making our Christingles with Year 5
Reception Class and Year 5 worked together to make their Christingles for the school's Christingle Service.

Wednesday 13th January
This term we are learning all about measuring in maths. We are doing lots of practical activities and have loved measuring the height and weight of different objects around the classroom.
Developing our self-confidence and being like 'Have a go Jo' during PE.
Everyone finds things difficult but Reception Class have got a fantastic attitude and will always have a go at something new. Today we got the PE apparatus out and the children were amazing in what they achieved.
This half-term our topic will be Making Things Move.

A Miracle in Town
We had a super time performing our Christmas Nativity story to all of the classes and our parents.

We have enjoyed learning all about ice during our science investigation. We found out that ice is "cold and slippy." It also " melts when we hold it in our hands because our hands are warm."
Thursday 22nd October
Stay and Play Morning
This morning we have had lots of fun showing our families what we have learnt about our senses.
We loved exploring the messy 'snow dough' and shaving foam as well as tackling the bush tucker trial. Who was brave enough to taste a lime?
We had a lovely time visiting Tromans Opticians in Malvern Link.
The children were fantastic on their first walk out of school and enjoyed learning all about the importance of our eyes.
